Moving the blog to Cloudflare Pages

Sometimes (most of the time) I think I spend too much time working on the technical stuff of blogging instead of blogging.
I start writing a post, when I notice something wrong in the head of the template, like a missing meta tag that no one cares about, but it’s the moment you realize you must fix that before finishing the post.

One day it’s the missing tag, one day is a variable hardcoded and another one is the build process that requires activating a Cloudflare account to build the blog easily.
Before Cloudflare, I tried Amazon AWS (more for fun than for a necessity, but too much right now) and Github Pages; nice service, it also has a web analytics service privacy first.
I think that Cloudflare Pages could be an easy solution for lots of people: easy to set up, no effort to maintain with a built in analytics tool, if you like.

It also has super easy documentation specific for Pelican (what else?), setting everything up took me half an hour.
Web analytics seems to be a good solution, with no fingerprinting tracking, and a simple dashboard, but with enough information to provide a good understanding of how users enjoy our websites. Don’t expect to get a full web analytics platform, but a good basic one with metrics like top hostnames, URLs, countries, and other critical metrics like status codes.
Anyway, at the time of writing, I decided to leave it deactivate.
Mmm, maybe I wrote enough, it’s time to go back to tech fixes, code improvements, and whatever.

A year of unblogging

Here we are, more than a year after my last post on this blog. Is not such a pity for the humanity, but I should work on it. Unfortunately my notebook suddenly died last year, and I have bought a new one just a couple of weeks ago.

I have been able to restore the blog; given that I was managing the blog files, I decided to upgrade Pelican to version 4.8, but I encountered some problems with some plugins. I spent the recent days trying to make it works, more or less.

While I was working on the blog, I decided to make a few improvements to the look and feel, managing some css style and fixing some bugs. I will write a post about the new version, to make it more clear and organized, and I will update the repo on github.
I lost some data about my Eva project, but actually I was in a very early stage and I can't even remember anything about my little achievements. I will look at this situation as an opportunity to go back and start again.

Now more than ever I see how time is the most precious resource. That's it for now, thanks for reading.

Moving to english

Hi, this is just an update after the migration. Yes I moved, I left the .it domain and I translated everything to english.
The main goal of this blog is to enforce my commitment to the projects I am working on, but I don't see any reasons to not use it also to brush up on my english.

After this decision I spent some time translating the old content, but above all I worked on my pelican template to manage some html tags usefull for translated content.

Hello World

Il titolo è un po' scontato, ma sono contento di essere partito, hello world! Il primo post di una serie che spero di riuscire a portare avanti con costanza.

Ho creato questo sito usando Pelic un generatore di siti statici in python. Per quanto riguarda il tema sono partito dallo scheletro del tema base e l'ho personalizzato un po'.
Mi piace come funziona questo generatore, mi diverte gestire i template ed i contenuti, inoltre posso creare dei plugin in python quando ho bisogno di nuove funzionalità.

La configurazione iniziale richiede un po' di tempo, soprattutto per gestire gli aspetti di SEO on page o per gestire le immagini. Per esempio, proprio per la gestione delle immagini ho creato un plugin che, data un'immagine in una certa posizione, genera tutti i formati necessari, con estensioni webp e jpg; il prossimo passo è integrare anche la gestione del formato avif.
Cose di questo tipo richiedono un po' di attenzione iniziale ma rendono il lavoro molto più veloce una volta che si passa a scrivere i contenuti.

Per ora sono soddisfatto del risultato finale, lo trovo veloce, privo di tante librerie caricate senza motivo e mi diverto lavorandoci. Ho ancora diverse funzionalità da implementare, con Trello riesco a tenere tutto organizzato fortunatamente.

Se sei interessato ad installare o configurare Pelican, ti consiglio di guardare la documentazione ufficiale, troverai tutto il necessario per iniziare o approfondire l'argomento.

Ho finito da poco di creare un generatore di link tracciati con UTM, al momento sto lavorando al mio progetto E.V.A. , un'assistente virtuale in python, ne parlerò sicuramente in uno dei prossimi post.
